Welcome to the Children’s Page!

At the Belfast Free Library, the entire second floor is a space for children and teens. This welcoming place is filled with a broad collection of books, audiobooks, creative play materials, and digital resources. Our friendly staff is here to help kids, parents, caregivers, and educators find the materials they need and the stories they’ll love!

Family Day – Declaration of Independence Exhibition

Experience History at the Belfast Free Library

Join Maine Historical Society and Belfast Free Library for an incredible opportunity to view the Dunlap broadside of the Declaration of Independence, one of 26 surviving copies printed on July 4, 1776. Explore Maine’s important role in the American Revolution and our country’s continuing effort to uphold our founding principles in this interactive traveling exhibition.

Step into an immersive Revolutionary-era experience on the outdoor patio for Family Day at the Belfast Free Library! Throughout the event, costumed interpreters in authentic Revolutionary-era attire will bring history to life, sharing stories, perspectives, and insights about the people and events that shaped the founding of the nation. Penobscot Marine Museum will also be there, allowing visitors to capture a memorable photo against a historically inspired backdrop and try their hand at signing their name with quill and scroll paper, just as Americans did in the eighteenth century. These engaging hands-on activities provide a fun and meaningful way for ticketed family groups of all ages to connect with the history behind the document.

Visit the Storywalk—Prunella

At Belfast City Park , 88 Northport Road, Belfast Maine. Start the book at the bridge near the playground and then walk toward the ocean for the next page. Read the story while walking the loop trail.

Free Entry to the Maine Discovery Museum!

Use your Belfast Free Library card to book a day pass to the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor – Discoveries Await!

A Free Entry Certificate is available to borrow using any Belfast Free Library card in good standing. The Certificates can be used for one day, up to 8 people.

Visit the Library’s Youth Services Desk on the 2nd Floor or call (207) 338-3884 ext. 26 to ask about availability and how to obtain your certificate.

Explore Wabanaki Homelands

Journey Through the Dawnland

Your Belfast Free Library’s Youth Services is participating in the third annual Wabanaki Homelands scavenger hunt, Journey Through the Dawnland! Bring your travel log to the second floor’s Youth Services circulation desk for a stamp, ask for Wabanaki books, and learn more about the Wabanaki and their homelands. As you collect stamps and answer questions in your travel log, you can win prizes including stickers, jewelry, and signed books by Wabanaki authors!

Upcoming Youth Service Events and Programs

Read to a dog

    Drop in during the hour. Choose a story, read to one or all of the dogs. This program increases reading fluency and confidence.

    July 31st Storytime will be in the Abbott Room at the Belfast Free Library in anticipation of rain.

      Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

      Enroll your child to receive a free book each month!!

      Waldo County parents and caregivers: You can inspire your child’s love of reading with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

      How it works:

      • The imagination Library program is now available for all infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Waldo County!!
      • It is free and easy to register you child just click here.
      • In 6-8 weeks, your child will receive their first book in the mail, “The Little Engine That Could.”
      • Books will continue to arrive in the mail monthly until your child’s 5th birthday.
