That Sweet Soul Music
with Neal Harkness
As white performers took the largely black music of rhythm and blues to the top of the charts, black artists such as Ray Charles and James Brown brought a new sophistication to their music and created a new genre that became known around the world as Soul. Through the sixties and beyond Soul music provided listeners with some of the greatest popular music of all time. With musical and visual aids, we will look back at the golden age of Soul and learn about the great artists who gave it life.
Our presenter, Neal Harkness has been a fan and student of American popular music his whole life. He has written on the subject for a number of publications and was a rock music programmer on community radio station WERU-FM. Neal’s courses on the history of rock and roll have been very popular at Senior College in Belfast.
