The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-El
Illustrated by Kelly Pousette
An inquisitive polar bear named Duane befriends an array of animals as he discovers where he belongs in this charming classic-in-the making that’s reminiscent of Winnie the Pooh.
In the Very, Very Far North, past the Cold, Cold Ocean and just below the hill that looks like a baby whale, you’ll find Duane and his friends.
Duane is a sweet and curious young bear who makes friends with everyone he meets—whether they’re bossy, like Major Puff the puffin, or a bit vain, like Handsome the musk ox, or very, very shy, like Boo the caribou. For these arctic friends, every day is a new adventure!
Ages 8—12. Great all ages read-aloud.
We're Not from Here by Geoff Rodkey
Imagine being forced to move to a new planet where YOU are the alien! This topical, sci-fi middle-grade novel proves that friendship and laughter can transcend even a galaxy of differences.
The first time they heard about Planet Choom, Lan’s family had been on Mars for almost a year. But life on the Mars station was grim, and since Earth was no longer an option, it was time to find a new home.
That’s how they ended up on Choom with the Zhuri — very smart residents that look like giant mosquitos. What makes it so hard to live with them? There’s a lot that the Zhuri don’t like: singing, comedy, or any kind of emotion...and HUMANS. If humankind is going to survive, it’s up to Lan’s family to change their minds. No pressure.
On the children's floor we are often asked for books for avid early readers, stories that are interesting and not too scary and read alouds that kids and parents can enjoy together. The link below opens the Gentle Reader List -- An inexhaustive, perennial work in progress. Some of these books are available now through the downloadable and online resources linked on this page. Others will be waiting for you when the library reopens.
101 recommendations and counting! The list will continue to grow, and suggestions are welcome.
