This summer, get up close and personal with one of our nation’s most sacred documents. A rare copy of the Declaration of Independence is coming to the Belfast Free Library on August 13-15, 2026!
Join Maine Historical Society and Belfast Free Library for an incredible opportunity to view the Dunlap broadside of the Declaration of Independence, one of 26 surviving copies printed on July 4, 1776. Explore Maine’s important role in the American Revolution and our country’s continuing effort to uphold our founding principles in this interactive traveling exhibition, which will be in Belfast for Waldo County’s tour stop on August 13-15.
AUGUST 13th:
Step into an immersive Revolutionary-era experience on the outdoor patio for Family Day at the Belfast Free Library! Throughout the event, costumed interpreters in authentic Revolutionary-era attire will bring history to life, sharing stories, perspectives, and insights about the people and events that shaped the founding of the nation. Penobscot Marine Museum will also be there, allowing visitors can capture a memorable photo against a historically inspired backdrop and try their hand at signing their name with quill and scroll paper, just as Americans did in the eighteenth century. These engaging hands-on activities provide a fun and meaningful way for ticketed family groups of all ages to connect with the history behind the document.
