Monarchs, Milkweed and Migration: What we are learning, what they need to survive as a species.

Speaker: Cyrene Slegona

Cyrene Slegona, of Belfast, will present a talk about Monarch butterflies, the mysteries of their North American migration and what we can do to help save these butterflies for future generations. Cyrene will review the life cycle and behaviors of each metamorphic stage, predation and disease, as well as current and future research about Monarchs. She will also discuss the milkweeds of Maine and pollinator-friendly gardening ideas especially for Monarchs as they prepare for their fall migration.

Cyrene is a Maine Master Naturalist and has studied these beautiful butterflies since the age of 12. She presented yearly Monarchs research projects with children while an elementary and middle school teacher. She continues to rear, release and tag Monarchs every summer. She has had the privilege of visiting their overwintering sites in Mexico for the past two years.
