The Future of Trees in Belfast with Mike Hurley

Ever wonder about the state of Belfast’s canopy? The new trees planted along The Rail Trail? Mike Hurley will share the work, the progress, and the vision behind GreenStreets! Belfast’s urban tree-planting, protection, and advocacy program.

GreenStreets! is a Belfast urban tree-planting, protection, and advocacy program created in 1979 by Mike Hurley and a crew of helpers, partly in response to losses caused by Dutch elm disease. The group  worked on publicly-owned land, such as City Park. Occasionally they diverged onto private land with—and sometimes without—permission. Their efforts were sporadic, and sometimes they made mistakes. Still, the great majority of the 2000 trees they planted are flourishing today. In his talk, Hurley will report progress on his recent and upcoming efforts to collaborate with other groups in Belfast, expand the volunteer base, and make GreenStreets! sustainable.
