Welcome to the Children’s Page!

At the Belfast Free Library the entire second floor is a space for children and teens. This welcoming place is filled with a broad collection of books, audiobooks, creative play materials, and digital resources. Our friendly staff is here to help kids, parents, caregivers, and educators find the materials they need and the stories they’ll love!

 


 

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Enroll you child to receive a free book each month!!

~Waldo County parents and caregivers: You can inspire your child's love of reading with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

How it works:

~The imagination Library program is now available for all infants, toddlers and preschoolers in Waldo County!!

~It is free and easy to register you child just click here.

~In 6-8 weeks, your child will receive their first book in the mail, "The Little Engine That Could."

~Books will continue to arrive in the mail monthly until your child's 5th birthday.

~If you have any questions contact the Children's Librarian at 338-3884 ext. 26.


 

Visit the Storywalk at the Belfast City Park

The story is read by stopping at 16 stands placed along the loop trail.

 Start the book at the bridge near the playground and then head toward the ocean for the next page.

 This STORYWALK installation is year round and the content is brought to you by your Belfast Free Library and City Parks and Recreation.

Belfast Free Library Youth Services Presents ~ The  2024 Children’s and Teen Summer Reading Program  

READ, RENEW, REPEAT!

For Children and Teens ~ Free events and a game board to record your reading and win prizes!

Visit  the second floor of the Belfast Free Library during business hours to receive a game board, a reading log and a list of free events for children and teens. You will mark your

progress on your game board and at five stops on the game, you will win a prize and a raffle ticket .

You have until August 14 to collect your prizes and submit up to five raffle tickets.

See you at the library!

Preschool Storytimes at Belfast City Park!

~ Presented by The Belfast Free Library Youth Summer Reading Program ~

Time : 10:00-11:00am

Dates: June 14 and 21 ~ July 19 and 26 ~ August 23 and 30

Location : The Belfast City Park ~ Northport Avenue in Belfast, on the grass next to bridge to playground.

Rain location: Abbott room, Belfast Free Library 106 High Street~

~ Stories shared through books, puppets, felt, songs and an easy craft. Bring a blanket and chairs as needed.


 

Wiggle and Rhyme ~ for Babies and Toddlers

~ Presented by The Belfast Free Library Youth Summer Reading Program ~

Time : 10:00-11:00am

Dates: June 17 and 24 ~ July 22 and 29 ~ August 19 and 26

Location : The Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library

~ Content is prepared for birth through age 2.  First 20 minutes are rhymes, songs and literacy followed by play time and social time with bubbles.


 

School-Age Reader's Crew

~ Presented by Belfast Free Library Youth Summer Reading Program ~

Time :  4:00-5:00pm

Dates:  June 25, July 11, July 30

Location : Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library

Gather, eat snacks and talk about books. Bring your current favorite book  or tell us about something you read recently. This group will not focus on one book at a time.  Instead it

will be a discussion of current reading interests.

Meeting the Neighbors : An Introduction to Local Birds

~ Presented by Belfast Free Library Youth Summer Reading Program ~

Time :  6:00-7:00pm

Dates:  Monday, July 8

Location : Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library

~ Ages 6 and up ~

Photographer and naturalist  Evan Henerberry will take older children on a bird hike from our chairs this summer. Nature is all around us and we share our yards with lots of

interesting creatures. Using projected photos and some basics of birding, you will get to know some of your most colorful and talkative neighbors. From the Northern Mockingbird

imitating your ringtone, to Bluebirds that aren't actually blue, get to know some of the best neighbors you might not have met!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

The Museum of Maritime Pets : Maine Lighthouse Mascots

~ Presented by Belfast Free Library Youth Summer Reading Program ~

Dates:  Friday, July 12

Location : Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library

~ Ages 6 and up ~

Patricia Sullivan, director of the Museum of Maritime Pets, will present illustrated exhibit panels and stories about some of Maine’s many lighthouse celebrities and mascots. These

endearing animals provided companionship for Keepers and their families, but also performed acts of bravery, service and entertainment.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

The Butterfly Guy ~ Jerry Schneider

~ Presented by Belfast Free Library Youth Summer Reading Program ~

Location : Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library

~ Families with children of all ages are welcome ~

Learn all about butterflies through beautiful projected pictures and well-told stories from Jerry Schneider—The Butterfly Guy. Discover how to attract them to your yard and

garden, the difference between butterflies and moths, and how they behave in the wild. Then create your own butterfly t-shirt.

A Riot in the Garden ~ Songs and Stories for a Small Planet with Stand-up Chameleon Jackson Gillman

The Song Dog Puppeteer's Perform "Coyote and the Boy Ben"

~ This is a marionette show about the wonderful relationships in our lives and in the lives of the wild ones who share our planet with us.

This is a story of a Mother Coyote searching for her little pup who has run off to play. A boy called Ben is playing in the forest too.
