The Special Collections department within the Belfast Free Library is responsible for collecting, preserving, and making available for research the materials relating primarily to the history and culture of Belfast and of Waldo County.
It is located on the third floor of the library, and features:
- Archival collections
- Reference materials
- Computers for research purposes
- Photocopier (.10/copy)
- Microfilm reader and printer (.10/copy)
Archival collections include the Republican Journal and other Belfast papers on microfilm; historical records of Belfast and Waldo County families, organizations, and businesses; town reports; photos; postcards; maps; and Belfast school yearbooks. **For materials in our Archive (including newspapers), please make an appointment to ensure availability by emailing [email protected].**
Reference materials include volumes of Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire town and county history; family histories; surname files; published vital statistics and census records; and cemetery and funeral home records.
